Self-settled by Rohingya refugees from Burma (now Myanmar) in 1991.
It began an official camp managed by the Bangladesh government in 2017 following the massive arrival of Rohingyas escaping genocide in Myanmar.
The official camp represents only a small portion of the area, mostly composed of makeshift shelters.
Kutupalong is today the largest refugee camp in the world.
